Meet Hiram Soto

Hiram Soto is a proud Powegian, business owner, soccer coach and a former San Diego Union-Tribune reporter. He is a father of three girls who attend schools in the Poway Unified School District. He is a nonprofit leader and an advocate for middle-class families, small businesses and senior citizens.

He stood with residents in pushing back against the city’s 40 percent water rate increases, supported neighbors in helping protect Starridge Park from becoming a sports complex, and helped raise funds to support employees who were furloughed following the city’s disastrous boil-water advisory that crippled restaurants in Poway in 2019.

Hiram Soto believes our democracy is stronger when more people vote and when elected officials are accountable to their constituents. That’s why he helped protect district elections in Poway by joining a federal lawsuit that successfully fought back efforts to dilute the power of Powegians at the ballot box. He has spoken forcibly against efforts by local elected officials to circumvent voters by abusing the political appointment process.

He is a former award-winning journalist who spent 10 years at the San Diego Union-Tribune covering underrepresented and middle-class communities, shedding light on corruption and government abuse, and interviewing politicians from both sides of the aisle, including Vice President Kamala Harris. He covered the 2003 and 2007 wildfires, which destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in Poway.

Hiram Soto is the founder of The Powegian, a citizen-driven digital platform created to give residents a platform to make their voices heard. He is a board member of the Poway Historical Society and a member of the Poway Chamber of Commerce. He pledges to be an independent voice on the Poway City Council and represent residents with honesty, integrity, fairness and equality.
