Best Thing Anyone Has Ever Said To Me. Period.

Meeting people is one of my favorite things to do. It's something that happens a lot on the campaign trail, which is great. As you can imagine, running a campaign is hard work with lots of ups and downs.

A friend of mine who is a councilmember in Las Cruces, New Mexico, told me that whenever I was having a bad day, to go out and knock on some doors. Nine times out of 10, she said, you will come back feeling better.

She was so right.

Still, nothing prepared me for a beautiful interaction I had with Eileen, a 96 year-old Powegian, who came to a cul-de-sac meet and greet. Eileen sat quietly during the question and answer session. At the end I asked her: Eileen, you didn’t say a word. Do you have a question or a comment you would like to make, to which she said to me:

My father was an immigrant who came to this country for a better life. He helped build this country. It is people like you, immigrants, who make this country great. You give me hope the American Dream is still alive.

This is hands down the best/coolest/awesomeness thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you, Eileen.
